Abstract
Despite the rich literature in the field of product development there have been few studies in the field of specifications. Specifications are vital f or reduction of lead-time, cost and improving quality. With the help of a q uestionnaire study, this paper first identifies the important control param eters in specifications perceived by the suppliers. The results from the su rvey are regrouped into different parameters such as supplier capability, s ame segment supplier, etc. In order to develop an understanding of the cont ext and causal conditions, three in-depth case studies were conducted in an OEM and three expert supplier firms in the auto industry. A conceptual fra mework was identified as a result of the analysis of the control elements. Comparisons between the OEM and best practice Toyota resulted in the identi fication of important factors. It was concluded that interplay between the different specification control parameters was vital to the success of proj ects.
