The simulation of dynamic fluid-structure interaction has historically pres
ented several challenges when computed on patched grid systems. Traditional
ly, the structures are static or constrained to predefined motions, as with
a piston. However, overset grid methods, in the context of patched grid sy
stems, provide a vehicle for simulating truly dynamic fluid-structure respo
nse and interaction for geometrically complex objects. Presented here is a
new method for the simulation of dynamic fluid-structure interaction based
on patched-overset grid systems, which allows for the coupled dynamics of t
he problem to define the movement of fluid and structure. (C) 1999 Academic
