Magnetic resonance imaging has become a major diagnostic tool in many disea
ses of the central nervous system. However, computed-tomography has still s
everal advantages so that this technique is still an important diagnostic i
nstrument. The article briefly illustrates the benefit of each technique in
cerebrovascular diseases, brain tumors, neurodegenerative and inflammatory
diseases of the brain and finally head trauma. Indication for CT or MRI is
based on the tentative diagnosis, cooperation of the patient and urgency.
