Abstract
The solid alpha-phase of Mg3Bi2 does not melt directly but undergoes a phas e transition to the beta-phase and then melts. From a neutron diffraction e xperiment it was concluded that beta-Mg3Bi2 is a superionic conductor in wh ich magnesium is the mobile ion with the bismuth ions forming the rigid lat tice. Two quasielastic neutron scattering experiments have been performed t hat confirm Mg2+ is indeed mobile in the beta-phase. (C) 1999 Elsevier Scie nce B.V. All rights reserved.
