T. Stohlker et al., Angular distribution studies for the time-reversed photoionization processin hydrogenlike uranium: The identification of spin-flip transitions, PHYS REV L, 82(16), 1999, pp. 3232-3235
The K-shell photoelectric effect for a hydrogenlike U91+ ion is studied by
its time-reversed process occurring in relativistic collisions between ban
uranium ions and low-Z target atoms. In the time-reversed situation, an ele
ctron is captured into the Is ground state with the simultaneous emission o
f a photon. We present an angular differential study of these transitions f
or laboratory observation angles between nearly 0 degrees and 150 degrees.
Our observation of photon emission close to 0 degrees allowed us to identif
y spin-flip contributions to the photoionization process and to determine t
heir relative strength. [S0031-9007(99)08948-6].
