Numerical solutions of nonlinear stress analysis problems are traditio
nally based on the finite element method. Here, we introduce a new for
mulation based on the application of the 'initial stress' computationa
l process to the spectral collocation approximation. We also consider
domain decomposition methods in order to handle complex geometries and
non-smooth data. We present several numerical results concerning benc
hmark problems in geomechanics.
