Abstract
Sub-stoichiometric titanium carbides TiC0.26, TiC0.49 and TiC0.78 have been synthesized by multiple energy ion implantation at the surface of pure tit anium. Young's modulus and bulk modulus have been determined by nanoindenta tion as well as lattice parameter by X-ray diffraction. Self consistent ful l potential-linear muffin tin orbital (FP-LMTO) calculation with empty sphe res in place of the missing carbon atoms give the corresponding bulk modulu s and lattice parameter values. Good agreement was observed between experim ental and theoretical values. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights res erved.
