Synthesis of poly(ethoxysiloxane), including generation of triethoxysiloxan
ol and its heterofunctional condensation, is described. The resulting polym
er was studied by elemental analysis and IR, H-1, and Si-29 NMR spectroscop
y, and its terminated analog was studied by gel permeation chromatography.
On the basis of the ratio between the units of various structures contained
in the polymer and its rather high molecular mass and low viscosity, it is
inferred that the resulting poly(ethoxysiloxane) is a hyperbranched polyme
r. This polymer is also considered to be a stable intermediate product on t
he path from the monomer, tetraalkoxysilane, to ultradispersed silica.
