A pulmonary embolus of acrylic cement was present in a 41-year-old woman wi
th Langerhans' cell vertebral histiocytosis (LCH) after percutaneous verteb
roplasty. Chest radiograph and CT confirmed pulmonary infarction and the pr
esence of cement in the pulmonary arteries. She was treated, vith anticoagul
ants, and responded favorably. This rare complication occurred because peri
vertebral venous migration was not recognized during vertebroplasty, Adequa
te preparation of cement and biplane fluoroscopy are recommended for verteb
roplasty.
