Hepatitis A virus has rarely been implicated in congenital infections. Afte
r maternal hepatitis A at 13 weeks' gestation, ultrasonographic examination
s revealed fetal ascites (20 weeks) and meconium peritonitis (33 weeks). Af
ter delivery, a perforated distal ileum was resected. Elevated levels of he
patitis A immunoglobulin G persisted in the infant 6 months after delivery.
