Abstract
This was a prospective randomised, investigator-masked, parallel-group , single centre study that was performed to compare fluorometholune-ge ntamicin eye drops with fluurometholone-neomycin eye drops in the cont rol of ocular inflammation after cataract surgery. Ocular examinations were carried out preoperatively and postoperatively on days 1 (baseli ne), 3 and 6, 60 patients (30 in each treatment group) of both genders undergoing cataract-lens implant surgery for visually disabling catar act were enrolled in the study. The baseline parameters wen similar in the two study groups. At day 6 after treatment (final postoperative v isit), cells in the anterior chamber (p=0.004) and conjunctival hypera emia (P=0.02) were statistically significantly less with fluorometholo ne-gentamicin compared with fluorometholone-neomycin. Both treatments were equally well tolerated. In conclusion, this study demonstrated th at fluorometholone-gentamicin eye drops were more effective than fluor ometholone-neomycin eye drops in the control of ocular inflammation af ter cataract surgery.
