In the present paper the use of CeO2-based materials in the automotive thre
e-way catalysts (TWCs) is considered. The multiple roles of CeO2 as a TWC p
romoter and in particular the oxygen storage/release capacity (OSC) are cri
tically discussed. Attention is focused on the advanced OSC materials conta
ining ZrO2, which are employed in the last generation of catalytic automoti
