Abstract
Neosporosis is a protozoal disease caused by infection with the coccidial p arasite Neospora caninum. Severe neuromuscular disease occurs in transplace ntally infected pups. rn some dogs, the hindlimbs will be in rigid hyperext ension. Early recognition and treatment of neosporosis can prevent death an d hindlimb paralysis. Neosporosis can also occur in adult dogs but is more difficult to recognize. N. caninum has a complex life cycle similar to that of Toxoplasma gondii. Abortions in dairy cows due to N. caninum infection is a worldwide production problem. Recognition of the role that dogs, and p erhaps other canids, play in parasite transmission can lead to better preve ntive measures on dairies.
