With a population of 1.5 million and territory covering 581 000 km(2) Botsw
ana's economy still depends mainly on its diamond-mining industry. However,
tourism has also been recognised as a potential source of considerable inc
ome, with a large portion of the territory now designated as a National Par
k. Up-to-date knowledge of the land cover has therefore become a priority f
or its sustainable development. This can be achieved more easily with the h
elp of space remote-sensing techniques, which are particularly suitable for
monitoring such a large area.
