Abstract
A field experiment was conducted during 1990-91 and 1991-92 at Ujjain, Madh ya Pradesh, to evaluate the suitable substitute crop in place of blackgram or urdbean (Phaseolus mungo L.) or compatible intercrop with blackgram unde r rainfed conditions. Pigeonpea [Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp.] was more econo mical sole crop to replace the blackgram. However, blackgram + pigeonea in 6 : 2 rows intercropping was as good as sole pigeonpea in terms of yield, b lackgram equivalent, land-equivalent ratio and monetary advantages. Blackgr am + pigeonpea intercropping and sole pigeonpea proved superior than sole b lackgram.
