Biatractylolide, a unique bisesquiterpenoid has been obtained from the Chin
ese herb plant Atractylodes macrocephala Koidz, [alpha](D)(20) +256(0) (c.
0.02,CHCl3). The single crystal belongs to space group PZ(1)Z(1)Z(1) with a
= 10.972 Angstrom, b = 23.377 Angstrom, c = 9.840 Angstrom. The unit of ce
ll contains four molecules. The structure has been solved by direct methods
and refined by least-squares method. Final R factor has been found to be 0.
045. Prilimary assay of bioactivity shows that biatractylolide, as atractyl
olide, has the activity of releasing guinea pig ileum.
