Abstract
It is found that the main contribution to the distortion of alpha-quartz te trahedra at high pressures is their twisting. It is shown that torsional vi brational modes lead to an instability that gives rise to amorphization of the structure. (C) 1999 American Institute of Physics. [S0021-3640(99)00806 -3].
