The experimental measurements of hard transition shift (HTS), obtained for
a set of different velocities of the magnetic medium, indicate that HTS inc
reases at higher medium velocity. The experimental data can be explained by
the expansion dynamics of the writing zone. Numerical simulation of the wr
iting zone dynamics indicates a time delay in the writing of the hard trans
ition compared with the easy one. The dependence of HTS on medium velocity
explains the degradation of overwrite at high recording data rates. (C) 199
