We discuss the spin reversal in magnets with random anisotropy in the prese
nce of the dipolar interaction. Past work by different groups is recapitula
ted. We point out the deficiencies of these works and propose a model to ti
e these ideas together that provides for an internally consistent framework
to describe nanocomposite magnets where both the dipolar interaction and t
he random anisotropy cannot be ignored. (C) 1999 American Institute of Phys
