Phase transformations in InSb irradiated by excimer and ruby lasers are stu
died both theoretically and experimentally. Thermal equilibrium and non-equ
ilibrium one-component models are employed for the theoretical analysis of
time-resolved reflectivity measurements. For ruby laser, a close similarity
between the experimental and calculated values of surface melt duration is
observed. However, contrary to this the theoretical predictions for excime
r laser differ substantially from experimental values. This fact is interpr
eted in terms of the amorphisation and decomposition of the surface layer a
fter excimer laser irradiation, as shown by LEED/AES. (C) 1999 Elsevier Sci
