Optical-grade KTA crystals doped with Yb3+ have been grown from self-fluxes
by the TSSG-pulling method. It has been found that the doping level can re
ach 0.1 wt%. The Yb segregation coefficient has been estimated of about 0.2
. The intensive luminescence in the range near 1 mu m has been demonstrated
showing typical Yb3+ line-type structure. Formation of two types of Yb3+ d
efects similar in parameters is likely to be a result of Ti(1) and Ti(2) su
bstitution in KTA lattice. The probable mechanisms of charge compensation i
n the Yb doping process have been discussed. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V.
