This study compared family and professional assessments of rite communicati
on skills of 34 preschool males with fragile X syndrome. Parents and profes
sionals rated the boys' receptive and expressive communication. Parents als
o reported on the vocabulary skills of 16 of the boys, whereas professional
s assessed their vocabulary diversity wing a communication sample. Moderate
agreement was found between,een parents and professionals for expressive c
ommunication ratings, whereas agreement for receptive communication ratings
was low to moderate. Parents rated their children significantly higher tha
n professionals for receptive communication but not for expressive communic
ation. Parents and professionals rated children at a higher cognitive age a
s having fewer difficulties with receptive and expressive communication, wh
ereas older children were rated as having more problems.
