Abstract
The self aggregation of sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS), octyl phenyl polyoxyet hylene ether (Triton X-100), polyoxyethylene sorbitan monolaurate (Tween 20 ), monopalmitate (Tween 40), monostearate (Tween 60) and monooleate (Tween 80) and the binding of the dye safranine T (ST) with micelles of the above surfactants have been studied by absorption, emission and tensiometric meth ods in the presence of glucose, galactose, sucrose and maltose. The carbohy drates have been observed to appreciably affect the critical micellar conce ntration (CMC) of the surfactants, their aggregation number and the ST-mice lle binding constant. The results have been attempted to rationalize on phy sical chemical basis. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.
