Room temperature HREM studies of Pb(Zr0.99Ti0.01)O-3 Single crystals reveal
ed the presence of antiferroelectric alignment of the dipole moments along
the [110](c) similar to that observed in PbZrO3. In the case of low Ti-cont
ent lead zirconate-lead titanate crystals we found, however, diffusseness o
f the 1/4 110 superlattice reflections along the [110](c) indicating a loca
l disorder in the lead sublattice. The walls between 60 degrees domains wer
e observed in [111](c) and [110](c) zone axis HREM images. Moreover, diffus
e scattering along the [110](c) direction was observed in the paraelectric
phase (at 575 K) and related to the existence of nanosize polar clusters or
pretransitional disorder. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserv
