Electrochemical properties of C60F36 have been studied by cyclic volta
mmetry in CH2Cl2 containing 0.1 M tetrabutylammonium hexafluorophospha
te. The electrochemical reductions of C60F36 are reported for the firs
t time. The first and second half-wave potentials for C60F36, respecti
vely, are -0.05 and -0.48 V vs. Ag+/Ag as opposed to those for C-60 (-
0.88 and -1.32 V) and C60F46 (0.51 and 0.01 V) indicating that the ele
ctron affinity of C60F36 is smaller than that of C60F46 by ca. 0.56 eV
. The results also demonstrate that the electron affinity and, consequ
ently, the electronic structure of C60Fx varies as a function of the n
umber of fluorine atoms attached to the C-60 molecule.
