Abstract
The authors describe a user-friendly way to model single-mode semicond uctor lasers and standard single-mode fibers using hardware descriptio n language dedicated to behavioral description of analog and mixed-sig nal systems (HDL-A). The laser and fiber model,s written in HDL-A, can be associated with circuit-level models or macromodels already availa ble for electronic components to provide a simultaneous time-domain si mulation of an entire optical communication link in a standard circuit simulator environment.
