This paper reviews our knowledge concering the neurobiological foundations
of hallucinations. It discusses organic visual and auditory hallucinations
and focuses specifically on auditory-verbal hallucinations ("hearing voices
") in schizophrenia, Relying on evidence from functional neuroimaging studi
es with SPECT, PET, fMRT and MEG, a model is proposed that assumes that a d
isorder of internal monitoring of inner speech is crucially involved in the
pathogenesis of auditory-verbal-hallucinations.
