The quality factor of niobium is shown to be dependent on both geometry and
treatment, but is roughly independent of frequency. The e-factor is given
by Q approximate to 10(7) (V/S)(1/2), where VIS is the volume to surface ra
tio (in SI units). The geometry effects lead to a lower Q-factor than previ
ously expected for test masses suspended by membrane flexures. (C) 1999 Els
