M. Maeshima et al., Cycloprodigiosin uncouples H+-pyrophosphatase of plant vacuolar membranes in the presence of chloride ion, PLANT CEL P, 40(4), 1999, pp. 439-442
Cycloprodigiosin hydrochloride (cPrG-HCl) at 10 nM uncoupled both H+-ATPase
and H+-translocating pyrophosphatase in vacuolar membrane vesicles of mung
bean, but did not inhibit the substrate hydrolysis. cPrG-HCl destroyed the
transmembrane pH gradient only in the presence of Cl-. The observations in
dicate that cPrG-HCl functions as a H+/Cl- symporter. Vesicle acidification
was restored by SO42- even in the presence of cPrG-HCl.
