Cs. Bauer et al., Different xanthines cause membrane potential oscillations in a unicellulargreen alga pointing to a ryanodine/cADPR receptor Ca2+ channel, PLANT CEL P, 40(4), 1999, pp. 453-456
In the unicellular green alga Eremosphaera viridis caffeine induces oscilla
tions of cytosolic Ca2+ which cause membrane potential oscillations. Applic
ation of the caffeine analogues isocaffeine, theophylline, and isotheophyll
ine resulted in membrane potential oscillations with a structure-activity r
elationship comparable to isolated ryanodine/cyclic ADPribose (cADPR) recep
tor Ca2+ channels from animal cells.
