The two sources of information used to measure tobacco consumption in Franc
e are surveys conducted by a variety of organizations and sales statistics
from the national tobacco company (Seita), The methodology of the surveys i
s discussed, and results in adults and adolescents are reported in tables.
The prevalence of smoking and the consumption of tobacco in France are towa
rd the middle of range observed in other countries in Europe and elsewhere.
In younger individuals, the prevalence of smoking is similar in males and
females. Available epidemiological data on the mortality ascribable to smok
ing are reported using tables. Morbidity data are not available in France.
Data on anticipated benefits of smoking cessation are also reported in tabl
e form, A list of references is provided.
