This paper; in the form of a review, introduces some technical aspects deal
ing with fiber-optic digital transmitters. The special case of the serial d
igital interface (SDI) data transmitter is considered. The paper presents t
he basic features of semiconductor laser structures; the problem of laser l
ight modulation and stabilization is discussed, especially for direct modul
ation; and SDI signal features are briefly reviewed. The most commonly used
mean-value stabilization loop is analyzed and its limited performance for
SDI signal transmission is demonstrated. Finally, the SDI designated feed-f
orward compensated stabilization loop is proposed and its properties are an
alyzed.
