N. Altan et al., EFFECT OF THE SULFONYLUREA GLYBURIDE ON SUPEROXIDE-DISMUTASE IN STREPTOZOTOCIN-INDUCED DIABETIC RAT MUSCLE, General pharmacology, 28(5), 1997, pp. 795-796
1. The effect of glyburide (glibenclamide) treatment on the muscle sup
eroxide dismutase (SOD) activity of diabetic rats has been studied. 2.
Four weeks of treatment with glyburide (5 mg/kg, orally) increased mu
scle SOD activity and decreased blood glucose levels. 3. The results o
f this study demonstrate that the sulfonylurea, glyburide, is capable
of exerting direct insulinlike effects on muscle SOD activity in vivo.
