New multifunctional urethane methacrylates were synthesised by addition of
methacrylates containing a hydroxy group, such as 2-hydroxyethyl methacryla
te, 2-hydroxypropyl methacrylate or glycerol dimethacrylate, to alpha,alpha
,alpha',alpha'-tetramethyl-m-xylylene diisocyanate. The structure of the ne
w monomers was confirmed by IR, H-1 NMR and C-13 NMR spectroscopy. The phot
opolymerisation of the crosslinking monomers in bulk using camphorquinone a
s photoinitiator results in transparent, crosslinked polymers.
