The physicochemical properties of novel mesoporous carbon sorbents and thei
r application for the preconcentration of trace analytes in combination wit
h HRGC are presented. For sorbent evaluation, scanning electron microscopy,
elemental analysis, H-1 MAS and C-13 MAS solid-state NMR spectroscopy were
applied together with measurements of the surface area, particle size and
shape, pore size and volume, as well as with determination of specific rete
ntion volumes of selected compounds belonging to different groups of adsorb
ates. The tested sorbents showed high sampling capacities and were successf
ully applied to the preconcentration and/or isolation of great variety of v
olatile compounds and semivolatile compounds from simulated samples and var
ious environmental matrices.
