Rate constants have been measured for the reaction of hydroxide ions with C
rystal Violet, Ethyl Violet, Pyrrolidine Violet and the 2,2'-isopropyl and
oxygen bridged analogues of Crystal Violet. The rates of hydrolysis of Ethy
l and Pyrrolidine Violets are similar to each other but are slower than Cry
stal Violet in accord with the electron releasing nature of the terminal gr
oups. Bridging groups also stabilise the dye system. Thermodynamic paramete
rs Delta H double dagger and Delta S double dagger have been obtained for e
ach dye. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
