Two new polymerizable stabilizers, 3-benzoyl-2-(alpha-piperidino-2-chlorobe
nzyl)-3-hydroxyphenyl acrylate (BPBHA) and corresponding methacrylate (BPBH
MA), were synthesized and characterized. They were copolymerized with styre
ne in different molar ratios to obtain new polymeric materials with self-pr
otection against UV radiation. The efficiencies of BPBHA and BPBHMA as ultr
aviolet stabilizers were examined by studying the change of the inherent vi
scosity of the copolymers during the exposure of the copolymer to UV irradi
