Abstract
The nature and strength of the intermolecular interactions in the alpha and gamma forms of even nylons have been analyzed using nb initio quantum mech anical calculations. On the basis of such interactions we have developed a simple model based on the additivity of energy group contributions that per mits to predict the relative stability between the alpha and gamma forms fo r even nylons. This model has been applied to nylons 6, 8 and 10 providing excellent results in all cases. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights r eserved.
