The present research examined the relationship between future time orientat
ion and condom use attitudes, intentions, and behavior. We hypothesized tha
t future-oriented individuals would be more likely to possess a positive at
titude toward condom use, express a greater intention to use condoms, and r
eport greater frequency of lifetime condom use. Results from two samples of
undergraduate college students supported these hypotheses for males but no
t for females. Possible reasons for the obtained sex differences are offere
d and implications of these findings for programmatic efforts to reduce the
frequency of risky sexual behavior are considered.
