Abstract
It is demonstrated that inhomogeneous birefringence provides an opportunity to produce light beams with a nonuniform polarization distribution in the cross section of a beam. The possibility of using this effect for the inves tigation of media with nonlocal nonlinear response aimed at solving several fundamental problems of nonlinear optics is discussed.
