J. Langhinrichsenrohling et al., RETROSPECTIVE REPORTS OF THE FAMILY-OF-ORIGIN ENVIRONMENT AND THE TRANSITION TO COLLEGE, Journal of college student development, 38(1), 1997, pp. 49-61
Retrospective reports of family-of-origin cohesion and physical aggres
sion, high school adjustment, and degree of difficulty in separating f
rom family were successfully used to predict 3 measures of functioning
(i.e., depressive symptoms, social anxiety, and perceived social supp
ort) during the transition to college in a sample of 93 college studen
ts. The results demonstrate that family of origin experiences affect a
ll three aspects of young adult's college adjustment. The intervention
aspects of these findings are discussed. The findings are also interp
reted with regard to gender-specific models of family violence.
