The shape memory properties and microstructure associated with gamma(fcc) -
->, epsilon(hcp) martensitic transformation in an Fe-14Ru alloy hare been i
nvestigated. The degree of shape recovery was measured via a bending lest,
and the microstructure was examined using X-ray diffractometry optical micr
oscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The Fe-14Ru alloy showed shap
e recovery to some ex-tent, but to a lower degree than in Fe-Mn-Si based sh
ape memory alloys. The lower strength of the matrix, the presence of epsilo
n and alpha' martensites at room temperature, and the higher stacking fruit
energy in the Fe-14Ru alloy are thought to be responsible for the weaker s
hape memory effect. MST/4094.
