The paper describes the use of cutting force to detect milling cutter break
age based on the discrete wavelet transform. The discrete wavelet transform
performs a multi-level signal decomposition of the cutting force so that c
utter breakage features can be extracted. Milling cutter breakage can then
be detected from the cutting force with or without the cutter breakage feat
ures. Experimental results have indicated that milling cutter breakage can
be successfully detected even under different cutting conditions. (C) 1998
