Modes and quasi-modes for m = 1, 2 are studied in a gyro-kinetic model for
a pure-electron plasma. Only z-independent perturbations are considered. Nu
merical methods are used to solve the relevant differential equations for s
mooth, analytic density profiles. Different temperatures and representative
profiles are considered and comparison is made with the familiar cold flui
d model from which the results depart but little, except at higher temperat
ures. A continuum component to the spectrum, present in the cold-fluid mode
l, remains in the gyro-kinetic model to the order considered. (C) 1999 Amer
