To avoid artificially partitioning Bauplane and Unterbauplane into discrete
categories, a generative formalization of archetypes and taxa is presented
based upon fuzzy set theory. The abstract morphological series of Brady ca
n be represented as a fuzz set which, in turn, can be used to logically spe
cify both archetypes and membership relations of taxa. A well-defined "idea
listic morphology" is outlined, one which avoids an intuitive basis, a form
al morphology that has precise definitions and rules of archetype construct
ion. This formal approach is demonstrated using freshwater crabs.
