A mathematical model is proposed for the space-charge region of a bipolar m
embrane at equilibrium with a 1-1-charged electrolyte. The model is based o
n the set of Poisson-Boltzmann equations and accounts for reactions of iono
genic groups of arbitrary charge with water molecules. Densities of the vol
ume electrical charge, electrical field strengths, concentrations of mobile
ions, and concentrations of all forms of ionogenic groups are calculated n
umerically as a function of the space coordinate for space-charge regions o
f industrial bipolar membranes MB-1, MB-2, and MB-3 and compared to calcula
tions conducted with the Schottky model.
