Abstract
Simultaneous synthesis and densification of TiB/alpha-Ti(N) composites from Ti (70 mol%)/B (30 mol%) powder compacts are achieved by self-propagating combustion under a nitrogen pressure of 5 MPa. Dense composite materials (9 7.5% of theoretical) exhibit excellent mechanical properties, in which thei r fracture toughness and bending strength are 7.8 MPa m(1/2) and 640 MPa, r espectively. Rodlike TiB grains greatly enhance the mechanical properties. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
