Abstract
A coumarin-fused electron deficient diene was prepared by the base-induced reaction of dimethyl glutaconate and salicaldehyde. Its inverse electron de mand Diels-Alder reactions with enamines give, after in situ elimination an d dehydrogenation, benzocoumarins.
