Satellite measured, scatterometer winds are composited according to the lon
gitudinal phase of upper tropospheric divergence associated with the eastwa
rd propagating, tropical intraseasonal oscillations. Results suggest that s
urface wind anomalies may be of global scale. They can be seen clearly in t
he zonal average. Accompanying anomalies in frictional torques vary by 5 Ha
dleys (1 Hadley = 10(18) kg m(2) s(-2)).
