Abstract
Magnetic linear dichroism has been studied to investigate the Gd 5p photoem ission peaks. The Gd 5p components have been labelled according to an L-S c oupling determination of the possible final states that can be reached from the S-8(7/2) initial state. These results show two triplet states. The beh aviour of the 5p peaks through the giant resonance has been also studied. T he 5p(1/2) peaks show a more prominent resonant behaviour than the 5p(3/2) peaks. (C) 1999 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
